We won’t deny that moving takes a lot of energy. Before you know it, you’re exhausted, cranky, and just plain tired, and bless anyone who says the wrong thing to you. Even if you’re hiring a moving company, there’s a lot to coordinate, not to mention there’s always some amount of stress.

On moving day, it’s important to fuel your body with the right foods that will keep you energized all day long. You need to be at your best to cope with everything that’s going on, from making sure your walls aren’t damaged to packing those last few items you said you’d pack last week. That’s why having healthy, nutritious, and balanced foods will help keep you going throughout the day.

We get it. Food may be the last thing on your mind when you’re trying to deal with the chaos that is moving. But we believe it’s important to take a few minutes out of your day to make sure you’re fueled up.

HOW SHOULD I PREP FOR MOVING DAY?

You’re going to need all hands on deck, as well as all your faculties, for the big day. Everyone in the family should have good, invigorating food that sticks to you, something healthy and nutritious. It needs to sustain you throughout the day, as well as help reduce stress and fatigue. On the flip side, it needs to be light enough that it won’t slow you down.

Many healthy diets contain plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. You’ll find that most (overly) processed foods, like fast foods, have too much sugar and will only give you a short burst of energy before a sharp dip.

We recommend prepping your meals for moving day ahead of time so you won’t have to worry about having to cook while trying to handle the move.

Pizza may be easy to order, but it’s also not so hard to plan your meals a few days in advance:

  • Do your grocery shopping a couple of days before your move. Pick up healthy options like fruits and veggies, lean meats, or even whole grain products, bearing any dietary restrictions, food allergies, or sensitivities in mind.
  • Make your meals in advance. Simple meals like pasta or soups can be easy to make and keep in the fridge. That way, all you have to do is heat it up in the microwave on moving day.
  • Finger foods are great for moving day. They’re usually easy to assemble and even easier to eat for a quick, on-the-go pick-me-up.
  • Healthy, high-energy snacks are great to have, whether for the kids or for yourself—nuts, fruits, granola bars, etc.

Planning ahead only takes a few minutes, and you won’t have to worry about finding something to eat on the day of your move.

WHAT SHOULD I EAT ON MOVING DAY?

It’s best to be prepared with a menu for moving day, including lunch, breakfast, and dinner.

Breakfast

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and we couldn’t agree more. It will keep you sustained throughout the day, especially if you don’t have a chance to grab a snack. Even if you think it’s a waste of time to eat breakfast, you may be glad you had the meal while you could.

A healthy, well-balanced breakfast is exactly what you need to start your day off right. Some options include:

  • Oatmeal
  • Cereal that’s not packed with sugar
  • Bagels or other pastries
  • Toast
  • Eggs

Avoid foods that can sometimes make you feel sluggish, like bacon, salami, or sausage. On the flip side, pair your breakfast with a cup of coffee for a boost of energy. Just don’t drink too much caffeine, or your anxiety may run high.

Lunch

Lunchtime can sometimes be the busiest part of moving day, so much so that it can feel like utter chaos. Here are some healthy lunch options you can have prepared in advance:

  • Sandwiches
  • Salads
  • Veggies and dip
  • Pre-made pasta and sauce
  • Crockpot meals

Dinner

At the end of an utterly exhausting day, you probably won’t want to do much cooking. That’s why you need a good, filling, and satisfying meal to help you recover from all that work. Those crockpot meals can undoubtedly come in handy, as they can be made in big batches for the whole family. If not, you may want to reward yourself for a job well done and order your favorite DoorDash or takeout.
