If there’s one thing we love about the Upstate, it’s the variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants. There’s such diversity in Greenville, South Carolina, and we can’t get enough! From sushi and hibachi joints to Indian cuisine and tapas bars, there are many places to check out — sometimes, we wonder if we’ll ever be able to visit them all in a single lifetime!
But how about coffee shops? There’s nothing quite like sitting in a cozy chair in a quiet cafe with a few friends (or maybe just a really good book). Fortunately for all of us, some of the most amazing coffee shops can be found right here in the Upstate.
Our Favorite Coffee Shops in the Upstate
COFFEE UNDERGROUND
Founded in the 90s, Coffee Underground is exactly as the name sounds: underground, in a basement! You can find this cozy little spot in downtown Greenville at the corner of Coffee Street and Main Street, and it’s the perfect place to hang out with friends, bring your laptop to do some remote work, or even just chill out with a tasty, steaming cup of coffee and that book you’ve been meaning to read. They have a huge selection of flavored lattes, tea by the pot, and a big case of treats to choose from. (Be sure to try a bite of their signature Strawberry Cake!)
The only downside to Coffe Underground is that it is a hugely popular spot, meaning it can get incredibly crowded during peak hours, especially on weekends. They do have quite a bit of seating, but even that fills up pretty quickly. Still, Coffee Underground is a hot spot to check out!
TREEHOUSE CAFE
This artsy little spot is perfect for both kids and adults. You can find it on the main strip in Travelers Rest, at the intersection of Main Street and Poinsett. Not only do they offer delicious lattes (be sure to check out the lattes of the month!) and food options, but they also have arts and crafts supplies that you can buy and paint right in the cafe! For non-meat eaters, Treehouse Cafe has vegetarian and vegan food options on its menu and some tasty vegan treats like scones and cookies.
The atmosphere is cute and quirky, sporting lots of color, writing on the walls, and customer paintings and drawings everywhere. It’s a great place to bring the kids on the weekend for a few hours of crafts. Seating is limited, as the cafe isn’t big, so be sure to call ahead.
BARISTA ALLEY CAFE & ROASTERY
Barista Alley is found right in the heart of downtown Greer, and it’s a fantastic coffee shop. They aim to provide customers with “the ultimate coffee experience, whether it’s enjoying a cup of our coffee in the comfort of your own home or in one of our Cafés.” So, yes, not only do they offer coffee and lattes in their shop, you can buy coffee to take home! There’s lots of seating in the two-story cafe, but it does get crowded as such a popular spot. So, if quieter settings are more your speed, definitely try to go during slower hours.
Coffee and espresso drinks aren’t their only talents, however! They also offer made-to-order crepes, acai bowls, fresh pastries, and all-natural smoothies made from real fruit. Looking to book a private event? They can accommodate just about anybody!
METHODICAL COFFEE
This stylish coffeehouse features its own brand of artisanal coffee beans, teas, barista drinks, and pastries. They also have a line of coffee grounds to buy and enjoy at home. The cafe itself is modern and clean, and it offers a great place to sit and work. The staff is always friendly, and the atmosphere is the perfect place to relax. Try the cold brew or even some of their teas. Not looking for caffeine? Taste their hot chocolate — people say it’s unlike anywhere else!
You can find Methodical Coffee on Main Street in downtown Greenville, which means (the only downside) is that you have to find parking. The Richardson Street Garage can be a good choice, and it’s a mere two-minute walk to Methodical!
SPILL THE BEANS
As a hip little place, Spill the Beans is one of Greenville’s most popular “meet you at” places. Is it because of the gorgeous views of Falls Park on the Reedy? Is it their wide range of coffee and drinks? Is it their ice cream with delicious mix-ins? Whatever draws people to it, we can’t get enough. This place is perfect for enjoying a cappuccino or ice cream while you sit back and relax. Bring the kids, bring your friends — you’ll love their unique atmosphere.
Spill the Beans is located on S Main Street in downtown Greenville, and you definitely don’t want to miss out on the view of the falls!
TANDEM CRÊPERIE & COFFEE HOUSE
Just down the street from Treehouse Cafe in Travelers Rest, you’ll find Tandem, which serves up delicious brews and even more delicious crepes. The interior is incredibly eye-pleasing, with its bright yellow seats, exposed brick walls, and cycling decorations, making it a great place to meet up with friends or family. Pair your crepes with a full-bodied cup of coffee (or something lighter, if you prefer!) and simply enjoy the atmosphere.
Found on the main strip of Main Street in Travelers Rest, it’s the perfect opportunity to grab a bite to eat and check out everything else that Travelers Rest has to offer!
This is just our list of favorite coffee shops around the Upstate. There are so many more we have yet to explore! What are your favorite spots to kick back and enjoy a latte or cappuccino?
